Andrew Cheng is an accomplished Toronto-based dramaturg, actor, and educator specializing in new play development, approaches to dramaturgy, and devised theatre. With over fifteen years of experience designing curriculum and engaging emerging artists, Andrew is committed to working with new and established artists on Toronto stages while advocating for diversity and inclusion.
Currently Program Coordinator and Part-Time Professor at Sheridan College, Andrew teaches undergraduate classes in the joint Theatre and Drama Studies program with the University of Toronto Mississauga, as well as courses in Sheridan's Musical Theatre Program. His classes include Devised Theatre, Solo Projects, Introduction to Acting, and Play Study. In 2022-23, he directed Mary Stuart as part of the TDS Studio Series.
Since 2010, Andrew has served as Associate Dramaturg and Instructor with fu-GEN Theatre Company, teaching collective creation and traditional playwriting methods with a focus on group collaboration and feedback. He also serves as Dramaturg Facilitator for Bad Hats Theatre (since 2021), administering the New Bad Idea Program and guiding playwrights through the creation process while identifying culturally specific needs and facilitating connections to subject matter experts.
Andrew's dramaturgical work includes collaborations with Soul Pepper (Yellow Rabbit), Gender Play (Every Day She Rose), Hart House Theatre (Yellow Face), Factory Theatre, Buddies in Bad Times (Reconciliation), and Circle Circle (A Man Walks into a Bar). He has participated in the Banff Playwrights Colony and served as Dramaturg/Writer for the Smithsonian's National Museum of The American Indian (Miss Chief: Justice of the Piece).
As an actor, Andrew's television credits include Letterkenny (New Metric Media/Jacob Tierney, Dir.) and Gavin Crawford's Wild West (CBC/Temple Street/Jacob Tierney, Dir.), for which he received a 2013 Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Comedy. Recent stage work includes Andy Warhol in The Life and Death of Fred Herko (Workman Arts/Claire Burns, Dir.) and Mikhail in Hotcuts (SummerWorks/Aurora Stewart de Pena, Dir.).
Andrew holds an MFA in Theatre and a BA Honours in Theatre from York University.
